NCG Top 100s Tour Visits…. Fleetwood Golf Club
Our event in Fleetwood saw our competitors battle the elements on the Fylde coastline…
If you are looking for a true test of your golfing ability, where you need to play the course and the wind, then Fleetwood Golf Club is the place for you!
It is the only true links course on the Fylde Coast, and Fleetwood Golf Club has been around for more than 160 years. The venue dates back to 1861, and has also spent time as an army base and rifle range, along with being a golf club during that time.
Having been somewhat sheltered from the winds on the previous day at Fairhaven, our players had to battle the elements at Fleetwood. The wind was whipping in off the Irish Sea, and the occasional shower saw umbrellas going up and down more times than a yo-yo.
As you can see from the card, the course can be extended as far as 6,500 yards off the Whites, with a Course Rating of 72.0. The back nine, which is a Par 38 compared to the front’s 34, is where the yardage comes in. If you’re going to score well at Fleetwood, you definitely need to do so along the sea wall on the front nine.

As mentioned, the course is on the edge of the Fylde Coast, looking out to the Irish Sea. Blackpool is around half an hour to the south of Fleetwood, along the coast road.
We are looking at putting Fleetwood Golf Club back on the NCG Top 100s Tour schedule for 2025 so keep your eyes peeled for that announcement!
What is the course like and what are the best holes?
As it is a true links, there isn’t much in the way of tree trouble. However, with the whipping wind off the Irish Sea, you do have to make sure you find the short stuff, as there is plenty of long grass and thick rough away from the closely mown areas.
There are two great little par 3s that we used as our Nearest The Pin holes, but on the day we visited Fleetwood, they played very differently. Both the 6th and 11th are less than 140 yards from the Yellows, but they face in opposite directions.
That meant that the 6th, with the wind behind from the sea, played more like 100 yards and just a flick of a wedge. Meanwhile, a solid mid-to-long iron was required on the 11th, which felt like it was pushing towards the 175-180 yard mark.
The length comes into play on the back nine, with three of the four par 5s on the closing side. The first of those comes at the 10th, and it usually plays into the prevailing wind, making it a true three-shotter.
The finale at Fleetwood is a risk-reward hole, and if you’ve got a good card in hand, then you will have to make a tough choice. It is 330 yards from the Yellows, but with a strong wind behind, there is a good chance of making it to the front edge with a solid bounce. However, there is plenty of trouble around, so most will take a long iron or hybrid to find the fairway, before then trying to find the putting surface with their second shot.
What did our competitors think of Fleetwood Golf Club?
Looking for other opinions on Fleetwood? Check out what some of our players had to say about the northwest venue here:
“It was very tough with the wind out there, but it is a glorious piece of land and a course that I really enjoyed playing!” – Ewan Gilliland
“We really enjoyed it. It is very different to our home course, and we’re not used to playing in such strong winds, but the greens were so slick and firm,” – Lynn Orrin
“We did get wet with a couple of bursts of rain, but that doesn’t take away from the great day of golf we had, and getting to play with the old man was a pleasure as well!” – Bradley Boddie
What about the off-course facilities?
At the centre of the property, and just a short walk from the clubhouse, sits a practice area that Fleetwood can be proud of. There are nets, a short game area to practice your chipping, and a decent-sized range where you can hit and collect your own golf balls.
In front of the clubhouse, there is also a quality putting green, with the surface running at the same speed as the 18 greens that you will shortly take to. Those on the putting green also have the honour of being able to watch those on the first tee, to see where (or where not) to hit their opening drives…
The clubhouse might be an older building, but it is a very relaxing and comfortable place to enjoy a drink and some food following your game of golf. The lounge bar on the upper floor provides incredible views out over the golf course.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…
Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.
He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.
Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…
Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
