NCG Top 100s Tour Visits…. Conwy Golf Club

A windy day on the North Wales coastline? That’s what our players enjoyed on the NCG Top 100s Tour…

Conwy Golf Club NCG Top 100s Tour

If you’re looking for a glorious seaside links with panoramic views, then look no further than Conwy Golf Club in North Wales.

For myself, the drive along the North Wales Expressway brought back some childhood memories of trips to Llandudno and Colwyn Bay. The views out to sea are sublime, even on a slightly grey morning.

If you play the course from the tips (Blues), then you are looking at almost 7,000 yards in length and a Course Rating of 74.5 (+2.5 to par). The Whites play at 6,667 with a Course Rating of 71.9, while the Yellows are still a challenge at almost 6,500 yards. The Yellows do play with a Course Rating of 71.1, suggesting it is slightly easier, but depending on the wind direction, it can feel a hell of a lot longer than that!

From the Reds, women play Conwy as a 5,800-yard course, which is a Par 74. The 5th and 8th become Par 5s, with the ladies playing a trio of par 5s in a row around the turn (8, 9, 10). The Course Rating is 74.2, with Conwy putting up a fight to all that play here.

What is the course like and what are the best holes?

Conwy is a true links course, and also the leading course in the north of Wales. Once you take yourself out on to the links, it is not difficult to understand why it is ranked so highly.

Like all links courses, the wind is a key factor at Conwy. On the day NCG Top 100s Tour turned up, there were 40mph easterly winds, which made scoring very difficult, but that’s what links golf is all about!

The first 13 holes are out in the open, with a number of those taking you along the beach. As long as you don’t flare one right off the opening tee box, you should be okay to get your round underway. From there, there are two glorious par 3s on the front side, with the first of those coming at the 2nd. It only plays 143 yards from the Yellows, but with plenty of protection, it is a green that must be hit.

The 5th is the hardest hole on the course, and with the prevailing wind usually being into the face, it’s easy to see why. At 435 yards from the Yellows, and a monster 460 yards from the Blues, the majority of golfers (especially with the wind into) will struggle to reach this green in two. Anyone who comes away with a bogey 5 off the 5th will probably be gaining strokes on the field.

The 7th is another great hole, and it takes you back to the perimeter of the course. The green is in a slight dell, and if you do fail to flush your approach, there is a good chance that your ball might find its way round on to the putting surface. When you have finished on the 7th green, and you’ve walked up to the 8th tee, just take a moment to enjoy your surroundings, looking out across the bay.

When you’ve had your fun out in the open, Conwy tries to bite back through its final five holes, which take you back through gorse-lined fairways. The 14th, playing with the wind, is a par 5 that can breached in two, but only if your drive finds the fairway.

The closing hole at Conwy is another picture perfect hole as well. Trouble lines both sides of the short grass, while the fairway itself is severely undulating, meaning you will almost certainly have some form of gradient in your lie for the second shot. The approach then takes you back towards the glorious clubhouse.

What did our competitors think of Conwy Golf Club?

Looking for other opinions on Conwy? Check out what some of our players had to say about the Yorkshire venue here:

“The views you get around this course are sublime, and the fact its only 15 minutes from my house is even better!” – Terry Chaplin

“This is a place that I would happily come back to again and again and again…” – Andy Schiller

“It was the first time we had played on the NCG Top 100s Tour, and we thoroughly enjoyed the day at Conwy!” – Hayley and Kevin McKenna

What about the off-course facilities?

Away from the championship links, Conwy Golf Club is also home to some amazing practice facilities. There are several practice greens in and around the 1st and 11th tees. Putting and chipping greens are available, along with a practice bunker for golfers to get some work in on those dreaded sand shots. The club also has a driving range to the right of the 1st tee, with balls available in the pro shop.

The clubhouse itself is a magnificent building, and there is a great bar area on the top floor, with doors opening out on to the balcony. There, you can enjoy the views of the golf course, and across the layout to the waters behind.

How can you play Conwy Golf Club?

Tee times are available every day of the week for visitors at Conwy Golf Club, apart from on Saturdays, which is the members’ competition day.

You can check out the green fees for a game at Conwy Golf Club here, and you can book to play at Conwy using BRS for Visitors here.

The venue is based on the northern coastline of Wales, just off the North Wales Expressway. Both Llandudno Maesdu and North Wales Golf Club are within just a few minutes from Conwy.

We are looking at bringing Conwy back to the NCG Top 100s Tour next year!
