  • Where in scotland do our panellists want to visit next?

With the compiling of the Scotland list for 2025 at its end, where do our panellists want to visit next in this spectacular golfing country?

Our individual panellists will not have played every course on the new Scotland list, meaning that there are some courses that they want to get to as soon as they can!

From courses at the very top of the NCG Top 100s: Scotland list, to those hidden gems that might not have been properly seen yet, our panellists have a wide range of choices.

Where in Scotland do our panellists want to visit next?

Paul Watson: Ailsa Course at Turnberry. I walked around it at the Open Championship in 1986. It’s been revamped and much talked about, so it would be interesting to compare it with other top courses in Scotland.

Michael Atkinson: Royal Troon – still waiting for the chance to try and land a tee shot on the famous green of the par 3 Postage Stamp 8th hole at the historic Open Championship course.

Phil Bedford: Durness

Peter Rudd: Southern Scotland is an area I would like to discover in greater depth. Played Southerness, but there are many other courses in the region.

David Fox: Trump Turnberry

Oliver Baker: Covesea

Jim Banting: Elie

Andi White: Loch Lomond. I couldn’t get a game, but my husband did!

Michael Verity: The Kings and Queens Courses at Gleneagles and some lesser-known sports like Lanark and Boat of Garten

Dove Jones: Askernish, Ardfin, and the redo of The Machrie

Hugh Masson: Carnoustie – Personally, I enjoy a tough course where every skill, physical and mental, is tested. To go through “Hogan’s alley” and the immortal finish would be a great challenge.

Charles Abraham: The Carnegie Club

David Elliott: The Western Isles. Would love to play some of those rugged remote courses (on a pleasant day).

Greg Webber: I still haven’t made it to Ayrshire!

Neil White: Panmure – heard so many good things about it.

The north of Scotland is also towards the top of the list for a few of our panellists…

Chris Myatt: In and around Aberdeen. Cruden Bay, Trump Aberdeen, Royal Aberdeen, among others.

Craig Redston: Royal Aberdeen.

Ian Woods: Old Petty at Cabot Highlands. Love what Tom Doak created at Rosapenna and keen to play another of his courses.

Jim Marshall: Trump Aberdeen.

Craig Morrison: To be greedy (and honest), I’m anxious to play the new Cabot and Trump courses.

Ed Battye: I am interested in seeing both the new courses at Cabot Highlands and Trump International, but usually like to wait for them to bed in a little.

David Walker: Old Petty – excited to see if this lives up to the hype.

Lewis Marr: Highlands, visited once previously, but I need to update the memory bank.

And then for some, a trip to the ‘Home of Golf’ is what they’re looking forward to the most…

Steve Watton: The Old Course

Chris Griffiths: St Andrews, and the Renaissance Club

Stu Bennett: The Old Course at St Andrews, or the Ailsa at Turnberry

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
