England's Top 100 Courses: Where our panel want to play next

West Sussex (Pulborough)

It has an outstanding reputation but it’s an awkward place to get to for me. The Berkshires are a close second.

I’ve played most of the ones that are on my to-play list. There’s a couple of the exclusive ones, like Queenwood and Beaverbrook, that people speak very highly of. Obviously haven’t seen them so I can’t really comment on them. They’re the ones I’m likely to never see.

Minchinhampton Old, from what I’ve heard about it, will tick a lot of boxes that I like in a golf course.

I haven’t played Woodhall Spa. I’m really interested to have a look at that in the next couple of years.

In the top 100 one which I haven’t managed to get to is New Zealand – I’m a great fan of those old heathlands so that would be one.

Playing some of the lesser known heathland has inspired me to play more and to that end I picked off Hindhead this year. Tandridge is next up – because I love the charm and history of these courses. There are many others too – including Seacroft, Prestbury and Cleeve Hill.

It comes highly recommended by my old friend Brian Patterson, with whom I played St Enodoc, and he described it as “the infinitely superior course”.

Wentworth (Edinburgh)

My goal was to have played every course on the shortlist by the end of the season. I missed out by one – unfortunately my visit was cancelled. That was the Edinburgh course at Wentworth.
