England’s Top 100 Courses: Where our panel want to play next

West Sussex (Pulborough)

It has an outstanding reputation but it’s an awkward place to get to for me. The Berkshires are a close second.

Queenwood

I’ve played most of the ones that are on my to-play list. There’s a couple of the exclusive ones, like Queenwood and Beaverbrook, that people speak very highly of. Obviously haven’t seen them so I can’t really comment on them. They’re the ones I’m likely to never see.

Minchinhampton Old, from what I’ve heard about it, will tick a lot of boxes that I like in a golf course.

Ed Battye

Royal North Devon

Because it has been highly recommended to me by Dan.

Peter Rudd

Woodhall Spa

I haven’t played Woodhall Spa. I’m really interested to have a look at that in the next couple of years.

John McLoughlin

Wentworth (West)

It’s the highest-ranked course I haven’t played.

Tom Irwin

New Zealand

In the top 100 one which I haven’t managed to get to is New Zealand – I’m a great fan of those old heathlands so that would be one.

Dave Cannon

Alwoodley

I keep getting told how good it is so I guess I must get there one day to see what the fuss is all about.

Colin Callander

Tandridge

Playing some of the lesser known heathland has inspired me to play more and to that end I picked off Hindhead this year. Tandridge is next up – because I love the charm and history of these courses.  There are many others too – including Seacroft, Prestbury and Cleeve Hill.

Dove Jones

Trevose

It comes highly recommended by my old friend Brian Patterson, with whom I played St Enodoc, and he described it as “the infinitely superior course”.

George Oldham

Wentworth (Edinburgh)

My goal was to have played every course on the shortlist by the end of the season. I missed out by one – unfortunately my visit was cancelled. That was the Edinburgh course at Wentworth.

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club review

Royal Lytham & St Annes

There’s one embarrassing hole in my CV which is Royal Lytham & St Annes. I haven’t been able to get to it yet but I will one day.

Steve Watton

Fulford

I’ve seen it on television over the years. It looks like a good challenge and well presented.

I am already itching to get on that 1st tee in York.
