Of course Bryson DeChambeau has names for his clubs

The Scientist has never been afraid to be unconventional, so it should be no surprise he’s handed out specific monikers to his clubs

  • What has bryson dechambeau named his golf clubs?

Nothing Bryson DeChambeau does is ordinary. Whether it’s the unconventional way he swings the club – which earned him the nickname The Scientist – or the massive bulking up programme he endured to try and hit the ball off the planet, he has never been afraid to try something different.

So it probably shouldn’t come as any surprise the LIV Golf and YouTube star’s idiosyncrasies extend to the way he regards the tools of his trade.

We already know DeChambeau wields a one-of-a-kind custom-made set of printed 3D clubs, the face-bulging irons, in particular, being designed to give him lots of length and a better feel.

But did you know that Bryson also has names for all his irons? With the 30-year-old well in the hunt for the US Open trophy, after a second round 69, Sky Sports Golf’s coverage of the third major of the year revealed the pet names he has for each of his sticks and their inspirations.

Bryson DeChambeau golf clubs

What has Bryson DeChambeau named his golf clubs?

3-iron: Gamma. It’s the third letter in the Greek alphabet.

5-iron: Azaela. It’s his favourite Par 5 at Augusta National.

6-iron: Juniper. After the 6th at Augusta (and you thought he didn’t get on with the course).

7-iron: Tin Cup. That’s some classic golf film love going on right there. In the 1996 movie, Roy McAvoy parred the back 9 in US Open qualifying with a 7-iron.

8-iron: 8-ball. Who knew Bryson liked a game of pool?

9-Iron: Jackie. It’s honouring Jackie Robinson – the baseball player who became the first African American to play Major League in the modern era. Jackie wore 42, the loft of Bryson’s club.

Pitching wedge: Herman Keiser. He was the Masters champion in 1946. And, yes, once again note the lofts.

Gap wedge: Jimmy Demaret. The 1950 Masters champion. There’s a theme emerging here…

Sand wedge: Mr Ward. This 55 degree wedge is named after Harvie Ward, the low amateur at the 1955 US Open.

Lob wedge: King. Arnold Palmer. Enough said.
