It’s called Golf’s Longest Day, and for good reason, too.
The journey to the 2025 US Open at Oakmont started on June 2 – the final day of Final Qualifying. Thousands of golfers will be looking to come through Final Qualifying, a gruelling and hard process.
There were 110 local qualifying sites, two of which were played in Canada and Mexico between April 16 and May 19. About 1,000 players progressed to the last stage a day of 36 holes at one of 13 worldwide sites in the USA, England, Canada, and Japan.
Final qualifying is one of 25 exemption categories that allow players to compete in the US Open. The third major of the year will reach its 125th edition in Pennsylvania, where Bryson DeChambeau will want to defend his crown, and Dustin Johnson will want to return to past glory from the last time Oakmont hosted in 2016.
The US Open became the first major to break rank and create a LIV Golf category. The highest-ranked LIV player, who is not already exempt and in the top three of the LIV individual standings by May 19, will qualify for the US Open.
Although LIV Golfers have played in the majors since the league’s inception in 2022, they have relied on previously earned exemptions and various other routes to qualify. Now, you can qualify for a major by being on the LIV Golf roster – there’s no need to go scratching around down other avenues if you play well enough.
DeChambeau, a star of the LIV Golf roster, won a thrilling US Open in 2024 at Pinehurst. He beat Rory McIlroy in what was one of the most memorable major finishes for years. McIlroy dramatically missed short putts on holes 16 and 18 to surrender the title to DeChambeau who won for the second time at America’s national championship.
Oakmont is a golf course that has hosted the US Open more than any other. It’s a brutal test and has produced winners such as Johnson, Angel Cabrera, Ernie Els, Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan.
