Having a good diet can help improve your golf game...

Are you unsure about what to eat before a round of golf? Modern day professionals are evolving the game to become more athletic from spending time in the gym to focusing on their diets. Our very own Mark Townsend experienced this when he played a round of golf with a tour pro.

If you’re wanting to take your golf seriously then then your diet could be vital towards you improving your golf game and lowering your scores.

We take a look at what you should be eating before a round.

How important is nutrition in golf?

Not having the correct levels of nutrients whilst playing golf can lead to fatigue both physically and mentally, this will lead to poor decision making and could ultimately cost you a good round.

Whilst it is important to keep fuelling your body during a round of golf, it is also vital that you eat correctly before your round.

What should you eat the night before?

Being prepared for your round of golf starts the night before by eating the correct foods for your evening meal.

It is recommended that a lean protein meal such as fish or chicken, is the best too have and eating this 90 to 120 minutes before you go too sleep. This will allow the body to digest the foods easily.

Avoid starchy foods such as pasta or pizza as this takes longer for the body to breakdown and may leave you sluggish in the morning, also, high fat foods such as steak or takeaways will almost certainly leave you feeling bloated the morning after.

Finally, the main item that you need to avoid the night before a round is alcohol. Avoiding alcohol will lead to a better nights sleep and will allow you to wake up feeling refreshed.

What should you eat before a round of golf?

On the morning before your round try to wake up at least an hour and a half before your tee time to allow enough time to make something that will be beneficial.

How many times have you or one of your playing partners woke up late and rushed too the first tee to play, then 3 or 4 holes into the round complains of being hungry and tired?

A high fibre cereal with low fat yoghurt and fruit is high in sustainable energy and won’t leave you feeling sluggish. Another recommended option is scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast. The main priority is to make sure you eat something rather than rush out the door without eating.

When you arrive at the club don’t be tempted to have a sugary snack such as a chocolate bar as this will give a rise and then a major fall in energy levels.

Instead have small snack, such as unsalted nuts or a small sandwich on wholemeal bread, this will give you sustainable energy to keep you energised and focused.
