Mold’s Steven Wilson joins Ghana Golf Development Board

Welsh golfer's Ghanian assignment

A well-travelled Welsh golf professional has taken up a role as director of golf operations in Ghana.

Steven Williams, of Mold in Flintshire, has joined the Ghana Golf Development Board and will oversee efforts to popularise golf in the country.

Williams said: “After speaking with the members of the GGDB and listening to their plans of growing the game of golf in Ghana, I was very keen to be a part of it. I am very passionate about introducing new people to golf, especially the children as they are the future of the game.”

Working at Tandridge in England under the guidance of former Welsh PGA champion Chris Evans, Williams qualified as a professional in 2008.

Having always had ambitions to coach and work overseas, Williams moved to Katameya Heights in Cairo, where he became head professional in 2011.
‘I am sure we can create a large pool of future golfers’ After five years in Egypt, and following the Egyptian revolution, he returned to his home town to continue his coaching education, but has now chosen to return to Africa.

He added: “By building close relationships with schools up and down the country and offering a structured national junior golf program, I am sure we can create a large pool of future golfers. I am also very keen to get more girls taking up the game and hope to change any perception of golf being a game for old men.”

With only around a dozen courses in Ghana, which gained independence from British rule in 1957, Williams will have his work cut out to spread the word of golf.

He will be travelling to all the clubs in Ghana and will offer assistance in attracting new golfers and helping professionals to introduce structured programs to their academies.
