When he returned from injury and scandal, lightly raced and unable to put in the training time to maintain his amazing strength, Tiger Woods made a small equipment change.
He switched his heavy-as-a-boulder, stiff-as-a-rod Diamana Whiteboard (75g, X-stiff) shaft in his driver, for a lighter, slightly less stiff Graphite Design Tour AD DI-6 (66.5g, X-stiff).
To a mere mortal the change wouldn’t make much difference, but to a finely-tuned athlete like the World No 1, it allowed him to generate the same distance while he got back to full fitness.
Last week at the Players Championship, he felt fit enough to put the Whiteboard back in the bag.
“I went back to my old shaft,” Woods said before play got underway at TPC Sawgrass.
“It helps not being hurt. I’m able to generate the speed like I used to, and I’m able to handle that shaft again.”
It seemed to work well at Sawgrass. Although these stats are somewhat flawed due to the fact Woods hit more fairway woods and irons than drivers, he was in the top 20 for off-the-tee accuracy and just outside it for distance.
