The time a horse was shown more respect than Brooks Koepka
It’s been an odd week in the world of professional golf, with tales of woe for Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed. Alex Perry explains in The Slam
Reed only
Patrick Reed isn’t well liked among his peers. That’s hardly news, of course, but the epilogue in this rather mixed year for the Masters champion is a shot square in the family silvers from fellow PGA Tour pro and University of Georgia alumnus Kevin Kisner.
Reed was kicked out of the college amid allegations of cheating, stealing and drink-driving arrests, and enrolled at Augusta State University, where he was supposedly tolerated by his team-mates in a bid to win the NCAA championship, which they did back-to-back in 2010 and 11.
And speaking to Golf Digest as part of a wider essay on Reed’s year, Kisner said:
They all hate him – any guys that were on the team with him [at Georgia] hate him and that’s the same way at Augusta. I don’t know that they’d piss on him if he was on fire, to tell you the truth.
Which begs the question – would anyone piss on anyone if they were on fire?
I’m not going to contact Reed for a response because a) he won’t reply, and b) it will almost certainly look like this:
Run for the (Dun)hills
This tickled me. The Golf Channel got the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which takes place in Scotland in October, mixed up with the Alfred Dunhill Championship, which is taking place this week in South Africa…

I’m actually disappointed because I thought they were doing it on purpose, which is a wonderful bit of social media trolling, as the kids say.
Alas the original tweet is now deleted, so it must have been a genuine mistake.
I just hope no one saw it and flocked to Carnoustie, Kingsbarns or St Andrews hoping to see Dimi Papadatos close out an opening-round 67…
Right. That’s enough from me. I’m going for a lie down. If you want more to read, our rules expert Steve Carroll has gone to town on the 2019 changes. If that’s your thing, he’s written this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this and this.
Steve also co-starred with yours truly as the other half of Rules Squad, which was a lot of fun to put together.
Elsewhere, Mark Townsend, James Savage and I discussed the odd things we do when we play golf alone, while Mark also mused what his perfect golfer would look like, right down to the legs.
Enjoy.

About The Slam
Founded in 2017 in a tiny green room in Leeds, The Slam, presented by Alex Perry, is National Club Golfer’s irreverent look back on the biggest news of the week from the golfing world.
It has since received rave reviews from the critics:
“This guy is nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is” – Facebook
“I wish he would get his hair cut” – YouTube
“WTF” – Twitter
“I heard him say Tiger Woods. Did he criticise Tiger Woods?” – Tiger Woods fans
“You look very handsome and I’m ever so proud” – Alex’s mum
If you’d like more musings from Alex’s little world, you can follow him on Twitter. Or don’t, that’s up to you. Probably best you don’t.
Want to see more episodes of the Slam? Then you must be really bored. Anyway, you can do that by clicking here or heading over to NCG’s YouTube channel.
