Our round-up of the latest club news from the South West.

South West Round-up: Macrow becomes 'Golfing Machine'

Cannington’s Ron Macrow has qualified as a ‘Golfing Machine’ coach, the first professional in the south west region to achieve the status.

The Golfing Machine learning system helps the Bridgwater College golfer to improve his students’ golf strokes by enhancing the coach’s observation skills to allow them to better analyse and diagnose each student’s unique golf stroke.

Macrow said: “Unlike most systems which tend to be based on ‘positional coaching’ and modelling on the golfing stars of today, the Golfing Machine philosophy is based on the geometry of a circle and the laws of physics. Provided this is observed, a reliable swing is achievable for anyone.”
‘A reliable swing is achievable for anyone’ Tour players head to Weston for golf day

Cricketer Pete Trego was joined at his home course of Weston by European Tour golfers Marc Warren and David Gregory.

World number one Warren made the trip down from Scotland and agreed to let those in attendance have a go at showing him how to do it in a ‘beat the pro’ competition.

Sporting celebrities taking part included Bobby Gould, Ron Atkinson and cricketers Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick.

The Pete Trego benefit committee thanked all of the day’s sponsors for their generous support.

Three members at East Devon score holes-in-one

Three members of East Devon all scored a hole-in-one in the same week.

Julian Reynolds and Michael Hayes got their aces playing in the Heslop Cup, while Andy Scott aced the par-3 eighth using his driver.

Scott told the Exeter Express and Echo: “This particular hole has ruined my card on many occasions, but I knew as soon as I had hit the ball that it was a good shot.

“When we reached the green, I was taking my pitching wedge and putter out of my bag when my playing partner said, ‘you can put your clubs away Andy, you don’t need them’. Only then did I know what I’d achieved.”

Club staff ‘tied up’ during Bridport burglary

A member of staff in his 20s was threatened with a crowbar and tied up during an aggravated burglary in Bridport.

Police are appealing for information after cash was stolen from Bridport and West Dorset.

The member of staff was approached by the suspect, who was wearing dark clothing and armed with a crowbar. He then went to the safe and stole an amount of cash, before tying up the staff member by binding his hands and feet.

Police inspector Mike Darby told the Dorset Echo: “This is quite an unusual type of offence to take place in Bridport.

“I have not heard of one of these taking place before in our town.”

A club member who did not want to be named, said: “I was one of the last people to come in on the night it happened.

“I think there was only a young lad there on his own. It’s such a terrible thing to go through.”

Austin wins Devon PGA

The Devon PGA championship title was secured by Downes Crediton professional Barry Austin.

Six birdies in each round and an eagle two led to two rounds of four-under par 65 for Austin at Exeter, who finished six shots clear of his nearest challenger.
