Tea cosy welcome for lady captain at Newton Green, PGA professional joins iPlayGolfUK, Mark Deeming wins winter championship at Woodford, former West Herts president passes away

South East Round-up: Tea Cosy welcome

Tea time came to the tee as the lady golfers at New Green got cosy and welcomed lady captain Sheila Walker into her role.

With a reputation as a mint tea aficionado, Walker was unaware of the surprise awaiting her until she turned up on the tee and found a reception committee wearing headgear consisting of a wide variety of tea cosies.

The new captain then donned her own fabric tea pot and managed a ceremonial drive of 114 yards.

The ladies then played a 10-hole four ball stableford which was won by Jan Doe, Carol Durston, Pat Hawkins and Susan Sills.

Outgoing captain Sue Thurgate thanked members for raising £6,000 towards her chosen charity, Canine Partners.

Poulter heads up iPlayGolfUK team

The UK’s newest multi-screen indoor golf destination, iPlayGolfUK, has appointed PGA class professional Danny Poulter as its director of golf.

Poulter heads up a three-man PGA team at the recently-established golf centre, on the outskirts of Newport Pagnell, which boasts six state-of-the-art simulator screens, two coaching bays and an advanced custom-fitting centre.
‘We are now the biggest custom-fitting facility in Buckinghamshire’ The 41-year-old, who has previously worked at IJP Design and Windmill Hill, said: “This place is truly amazing – in fact, it is golfing heaven. As a personal golf experience, it is second to none.”

Poulter’s team at iPlayGolfUK will create a new coaching environment at the centre, with the business able to conduct year-round, all-weather and late-night golf.

“Danny’s arrival gives us a huge boost, and we are surely now one of central England’s best places to improve your golf,” said managing director Neil Wilcox. “In addition we are now the biggest independent custom-fitting facility in Buckinghamshire, and having retail accounts with all the major brands means we can kit golfers out with everything they need to shoot their best-ever round.”

Deeming captures winter championship

Mark Deeming captured the winter championship prize at Woodford recently.

Deeming, who plays off six, amassed 154 stableford points to beat 16-handicap Kevin Williamson, five points behind, with Mark Bonham in third.

The first major event to mark the 125th anniversary  of the formation of Woodford will be held at the Sunset Avenue course on March 30, when the club stages a pro-am event.

Former president of West Herts passes away

Patrick O’Connor, the former president of West Herts has died aged 82.

O’Connor was president of the club from 2002 to 2005 and was twice captain in 1973-74 and 1989-90 – the club’s centenary year.

O’Connor had been a member of the club for almost 50 years and was heavily involved in its management, especially during the difficult period when members fought a judicial review against the council after it had sought to take over the running of the club.
