Woodroffe celebrates 15 years at World of Golf

Formers pupils gathered at World of Golf in south west London to celebrate Jon Woodroffe’s 15 years of teaching at Europe’s busiest driving range.

During a teaching career spanning three decades, Woodroffe has introduced 16,000 golfers to the game.

One of his first students was Martin Rathbone, who said: “I was on the beginners’ class at The Oaks in 1983 and now I’m head teaching professional at Surbiton, I can’t thank Jon enough.

“I understood the simple yet effective way Jon explained everything and through the years I’ve tried to replicate what he taught me with my pupils.”

In December Woodroffe was appointed head of golf development at World of Golf. He is the PGA in England (South) coach of the year and has been awarded the status of Advanced Fellow of the PGA.

“World of old is privileged to have someone of Jon’s expertise within its ranks, particularly when it comes to teaching young beginners and attracting more people to the sport,” said World of Golf’s Grant Wright. “We’d like to congratulate him on his 15 years here, and hopefully many more to come.”

‘Go Wild’ on the course with Born Free

Golfers across Sussex and Surrey are being invited to take part in the annual ‘Go Wild’ golf day in aid of Horsham-based international wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation.

The event takes place on September 3 at Wildwood in Alford and will see golfers compete for the coveted ‘Pride Jacket’ as well as a host of other team and individual prizes.

Fund-raising co-ordinator Joanne Bartholomew said: “This is the third year of our Go Wild golf day and we’re hoping 2015 will be the best event yet. Not only will players enjoy a great day of golf, they will also be competing against our own Born Free team who have been practising hard since lowing out to ‘Team Pantha’ last year.

Last year’s event raised over £6,000 for the charity’s conservation work, which protects vulnerable wildlife in the UK and around the world. Money raised this year will go directly to Born Free’s appeal to build a sanctuary in Tuscany for abused captive elephants that have been rescued from zoos and circuses throughout Europe.

Staverton Park crowns Winter League champions

Paul Hammond and Oliver Braker have been crowned Winter League champions at Staverton Park after winning the final of the series at the Northamptonshire course.

Seven handicapper Hammond and Braker, who plays off 15, defeated scratch golfer Russell Brown and six-handicapper Bart Pomerleau in the final of the better ball pairs competition.

The winning pair held a three-hole lead early in the final before eventually triumphing 3&1 to become champions for the first time in the matchplay competition.
