Sony Open Fantasy Golf picks
The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii for another week following Xander Schauffele’s win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions last weekend.
Patton Kizzire is the defending champion of the Sony Open after he defeated James Hahn on the sixth sudden death play-off hole.
The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 209 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my Sony Open Fantasy Golf picks.
Cameron Champ
Fantasy Rank: 6
The hype is real with Cameron Champ. We already know that he can hit the ball a very long way but he also boasts an impressive start to life on the PGA Tour. The American has finished inside the top 30 in his first six events since gaining his membership on the tour.
Last week was a good indicator as to whether he could be in the mix when the big names were in town and Champ produced an impressive T11 finish.
Zach Johnson
Fantasy Rank: 15
Johnson’s form doesn’t read too well, however, don’t look into it too much as he hasn’t made a start on the PGA Tour since the middle of November and that was a T7 finish at the RSM Classic.
What you need to look for in Johnson is his course form and his statistics around par 4 scoring, a vital stat for this week’s event.
Johnson ranked inside the top 10 for par 4 scoring in 2018 and has finished inside the top 15 on his last three starts at this event, a perfect recipe for Johnson to start 2019 on a high.
Ian Poulter
Fantasy Rank: 28
Poulter made his first competitive start in nearly two months at last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions and managed an 18th place finish.
However, the Englishman vented his frustration at his poor putting display as the rest of his game was in good shape. If he can get the putter working this week he could be in for a good finish.
it’s worth noting that Poulter is making his first start since 2005 at this event.
Jamie Lovemark
Fantasy Rank: 48
Lovemark is another player that enjoys playing at this event despite narrowly missing the cut last year. The American has two top 10 finishes in his last three starts at the event finishing T7 in 2016 and T4 in 2017. Lets hope 2018 was an anomaly.
Ollie Schniederjans
Fantasy Rank: 61
The 25-year-old comes into the event as a major sleeper but there are signs that this could be the event that his form turns around.
In the last two years at the event Schniederjans has finished T27 in 2017 and T7 in 2018 and he has shot seven out of eight of his rounds in the 60s.
Joel Dahmen
Fantasy Rank: 64
Like Zach Johnson, Dahman hasn’t made a start on the PGA Tour since November and the choice of picking him is mainly down to his statistics from 2018.
The 31-year-old had an impressive scoring average on par 4s in 2018, averaging 3.99 which saw him rank inside the top 15 in that category, however, he’ll need to do a lot to improve on his T73 finish at this event last year.

Matthew Beedle
Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.
Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.
Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.

Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.
Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.
Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
