The name Paige Spiranac may sound familiar to regular users of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The Colorado native is arguable the first of a new generation of golfer, who mixes good looks with a great golf swing – the Instagram sensation.
Her photos have racked up tens of thousands of followers in just over a year. In December, Spiranac’s web popularity culminating in achieving her dream of playing on the LPGA at the Dubai Ladies Masters. This has paved the way for others to follow suit – meet Elise Lobb of Jacksonville, Florida.
Lobb is a former Miss Daytona Beach who has played golf since she was 3. Her Instagram account boasts 45,000 followers, more than World No 1 Lydia Ko’s 39,000 but some way short of Spiranac’s 580,000.
However, unlike Spiranac, Lobb does not have her sights set on the LPGA.
“I am currently considering going back to play collegiate golf because I have realized golf is a part of who I am,” she said in an interview last year.
“If everything works out I would love to finish my college career playing golf and eventually working for the Golf Channel.”
Twitter Feud of the Week: Samuel L. Jackson vs. Donald J. Trump
If you haven’t seen the latest Twitter spat, it’s a gem between Donald Trump and avid golfer Samuel L. Jackson.
According to Jackson, Trump isn’t the most honest around the golf course. When asked who is the better golfer in an interview with United Airlines’ Rhapsody magazine, Jackson responded: “Oh, I am, for sure. I don’t cheat.”
Trump duly responded, calling Jackson “boring” because he “does too many TV commercials”. Touché.
Jackson also told the magazine that Trump made him a dues-paying member of one of his clubs without his knowledge.
“Last week or so, I actually got a bill from Trump National Golf Club,” Jackson said. “And I haven’t been there in four or five years, so I had my assistant call.
“They said it was for membership dues. And I said, ‘I’m not a member,’ and they said, ‘Yeah, you are — you have a member number.’
“Apparently he’d made me a member of one of his golf clubs, and I didn’t even know it! … I’m not payin’ that!”
Here is the bill in question, posted to Jackson’s Instagram account.
But Trump wasn’t having any of it, again taking to Twitter to share his thoughts on the accusations.

73-year-old woman records TWO aces in one round
For the majority of club golfers, getting a hole-in-one is a pretty rare occurrence. Getting two is even rarer.
So imagine getting two in the one round. Improbable? Impossible? 73-year-old Margery Hadar managed just that at Granada Golf Course in Florida. And best of all – she only took up golf three years ago.
“I used a driver on both holes, which I know sounds unbelievable. But, the seventh hole was uphill, and I felt I should throw caution to the wind,” said Hadar.
“We thought the ball flew the green. We walked up looking and there it was in the hole.”
The stats below (courtesy of Golf Digest) add to Hadar’s incredible feat:
- Hadar is the 111th recorded golfer to make two holes-in-one in one round.
- She is just the 17th female golfer to accomplish the feat.
- Two golfers have made three aces in one round.
- Hadar is not the oldest golfer (male or female) to record two aces in one round. That honour goes to a pair of 85-year-olds, Phyllis Semple and George Canney.
This is the stuff of dreams, and as you can see by this photo, she was pretty pleased about it herself.
