PGA Golf: Relive Shaun Micheel’s Major-winning 7-iron
Shaun Micheel’s victory at the 2003 PGA Championship – played at Oak Hill, site of this year’s event – completed the most unlikely quartet of Major winners in recent memory.
While Mike Weir and Jim Furyk were well established and fancied to break through at some point, Ben Curtis and Micheel were pretty much unheard of.
After day one, Micheel was three back. He led after the second and third rounds and, coming up the 72nd hole, was in possession of a one-shot lead.
His nearest competitor, Chad Campbell, was first to play his approach and knocked a mid-iron in close.
This would be enough to shake even the most established players, never mind someone with no other win to his name, but Micheel replied in style, unleashing one of the best 7-irons in Major history.
