Sepp Straka (250/1, 6 places), another graduate from the second league, also catches the eye.
The Austrian claimed his first professional win two months ago, and while it took a few weeks to settle down from that, he returned to form last time out when finishing third at the Web.com Tour Championship.
That was a far more impressive performance than the bare result suggested, where he led in the all-round ranking thanks to an average driving distance of over 300 yards in addition to hitting the eighth most fairways in the field.
Driving ability is usually a good indicator of success here at Silverado, so he looks worth chancing at a big price.
Finally, could this be the week that Danny Willett (125/1, 6 places) announces his return back to the top of the game?
The former Masters champion has been showing signs of life ever since finishing 8th at the Italian Open in June – since then, he’s made six of the last eight cuts including top-25 finishes in the Irish Open, Scottish Open, The Open and Czech Masters.
Admittedly he will need a big step up to win here on the PGA Tour, but perhaps he can draw on a third place finish in his only start in California at the WGC Match Play three years ago.
A good finish here would be the perfect way to kick off his 2019 season as he aims to get back to the form that has previously seen him as high as 9th in the world rankings.
