Portugal Masters betting tips and preview

We saw the European Tour's first 59 here last year. So who will be making headlines this year?

The European Tour returns to the site of its lowest ever round for the Portugal Masters. Oli Fisher made the headlines here last year before Tom Lewis grabbed victory, so who are we tipping for success this time around?  Before we get to my Portugal Masters betting tips here are the details…

The details

Venue: Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura , Portugal

Date: October 24-27, 2019

Course stats: Par 71; 7,200 yards

Course Summary: This course has played rather easily in recent years but could be tougher this year. Dom Pedro has seen some considerable investment and the Victoria Course has introduced Bermuda grass around the greens and for the rough. Not only this but there has been the introduction of over 2000 trees which which will alter the way some holes are played. Overall the course should pose more of a challenge and the scoring may not be quite as low as previous years.

Purse: €1.5 million

Defending champion: Tom Lewis (-22)

Live TV coverage

Thursday: 11.30am (Sky Sports Golf and Main Event), 3.30pm (Sky Sports Golf)

Friday: 11.30am (Sky Sports Golf and Main Event), 3.30pm (Sky Sports Golf)

Saturday: 1pm (Sky Sports Golf)

Sunday: 12.30pm (Sky Sports Golf)

Portugal Masters betting tips: Players to follow

Although this has been somewhat of a banana skin for market favourites in recent years, Matt Wallace (10/1 with bet365) could be the one to change that.

Despite not recording a victory for more than a year, he hasn’t been short of chances. He was in with a shout on final day at the KLM Open and Italian Open but in the end settled for two top-10 finishes.

I don’t see any reason why Wallace can’t grab his fifth European Tour title this week. He’s teed it up here twice and made the cut on both occasions without really troubling the leaders but with his current form and the progress he’s made since the 2018 staging he is a justified favourite.

Mikko Korhonen (25/1) has a lot going for him in terms of course and current form.

The 39-year-old has plenty of experience under his belt and is a Portugal Masters regular, with finishes of T12, T3, T9 among his recent results.

Korhonen has not missed a cut since June, making it through to the weekend for nine successive tournaments, and at 25/1 there’s plenty of value.

Chris Paisley (33/1) is enjoying a pick up in form and has played well here in the past.

A tied 40th in the Italian Open was a solid week after a couple of missed cuts and a final round of 4-under in tricky conditions at Le Golf National saw him finish tied for 8th last time out in the Open de France.

Paisley missed this event last year but before that had finishes of T12-T5-T37. He’ll have some good feelings around this layout and this coupled with the confidence gained from recent performances should see him go well.

Finally, Nino Bertasio (60/1) is yet to break into the top-10 here in his three appearances but did finish tied for 12th two years ago and made the still made the cut either side.

The Italian is in decent form and had good finishes in his last two starts in Spain and Italy – tying for 23rd at the Open de Espana and for 34th in his home country.

He knows his way around here and has proved that he is capable of going low and with some full weeks under his belt of late I expect him to build upon those results.

While he may not quite have a victory in him this week there is definitely scope for return on each-way bets.
