Open preview: Who will reign supreme at Carnoustie?

Who is your outsider to keep an eye on?

James: Matt Fitzpatrick seems to do well in the big events now. He knows how to play links golf and hits some nice stinging long irons which seem to be the important shot this week. He’s been putting well this year too.

Steve: Haotong Li was third last year at Birkdale. Since then, he’s won in Dubai and finished tied 16th at Shinnecock Hills after starting with a 79. He likes linksy courses and he feels too big at 140/1.

Alex: I genuinely believe this is the most open Open for years. I’m all over a Ben Curtis/Todd Hamilton type winner on Sunday.

Dan: We are definitely going to see some old-timers going well this week – I’m just not sure who. Langer is almost too obvious so how about the 2009 champion Cink, whose game has been, as they say, trending positively in recent weeks.

Mark: He’s not exactly an outsider but Kiradech Aphibarnrat is still so underrated.

Harvey: Erik van Rooyen made a run at the Irish Open last week and I can see him doing it again here. There is not a lot between Ballyliffin and Carnoustie.

Which British player will finish highest?

Alex: Matthew Southgate is a member of Carnoustie and that’s good enough for me.

Mark: The default is rightly Justin Rose or Tommy Fleetwood so let’s try and be clever and go with Tyrrell Hatton.

Dan: I expect Hatton to go very well this week. He is in form and played very nicely at Gullane last week.

Steve: Justin Rose has maintained his good form but has a mediocre Open record so I’ll plump for Fleetwood instead.

Harvey: Fleetwood is a determined and gritted figure who can grind out a result this week. He has an impressive Carnoustie CV too, holding the course record, 63.

And finally, who will lift the trophy on Sunday?

Alex: Because you’re all going to be predictable and say Rickie Fowler, I’m going to be predictable and say Tiger Woods.

Dan: Rickie Fowler ticks all the boxes for me and I noted his fast-finishing 2nd place in The Masters, when he looked to me like a player who expects rather than hopes to win a major.

Mark: It’s time for Fowler to finally tick one off. And it would be lovely to see Frankie Molinari push him close.

Steve: This seems ideal terrain for Fowler, who had a decent Scottish Open. And given he won’t have to hit a driver all week, this will be right up Tiger’s street.

Harvey: Tiger will roar come Sunday.

James: Paul Casey or Fleetwood. Both seem to have as good a chance as anyone this week.
