Open Golf: The Muirfield facts and figures you need to know

17

This will be the 17th Open Championship to be held here.

1-16-17-18

In the event of a play-off it will take place over four holes. If the players are then tied then it will be sudden death on the 18th.

63

The lowest Open score here, shot by Isao Aoki in 1980. Faldo and Monty are among those who have had 64s.

144

The cut score (+2) in 2002. In 1992 it was 143, the lowest in any Muirfield Open.

4.38

In 1992 this was the average score on the 18th. In 2002 it was 4.26 so don’t expect many late birdies. Nobody has ever eagled it in the Championship.

4.54

The 10th (1987) is statistically the hardest hole at Muirfield since 1982.

0

Muirfield does not have any of the toughest 1-18 holes on the Open rota. Birkdale has four, Lytham, Troon and Carnoustie three, Sandwich and Turnberry two and St Andrews one.

9

The highest score taken by anyone at the opening hole. Mitch Voges was the unlucky player in 1992.

2

Holes in one at Muirfield in the modern era. Billy Andrade in 1987 and Paul McGinley in 1992, both came at the 7th.

0632

The time the first ball will be struck on Thursday. Peter Senior, Lloyd Saltman and Oliver Fisher will get us underway.
