Mizuno Pro 225 review

First Impressions

The new Mizuno pro 225 irons live up to the visually pleasing reputation Mizuno equipment has. The combination of the muscle back club ,compact head and a blade look gives these irons an elite style designed for the better golfer. They are designed for the better golfer but are intended to be more forgiving with a focus on an increased ball speed off the face and a higher shot profile for a more stable ball flight.

Technology

Sticking to previous technologies the 225’s still use the classic Mizuno Chromoly and Grain Glow Forging for their unique feel off the face. The difference this time is that they have managed to hide their ball speed enhancing technology behind a more compact cavity head designed for the better player.

The redistribution of weight around the face as well as a shorter shaft axis allows for a more stable ball flight whilst still managing to create immense ball speed due to the COR forged hollow body and tungsten weight distribution.

An alternative to the long irons in the 225 series are the Pro Fli-Hi’s. This longer iron series is not new to the Mizuno range but has some added adaptations. It includes a larger sole and head length for even more ball speed and stability. It gives players the option to prioritise a standard long iron for approach shots or an alternative with a more driving iron style in the Fli-Hi’s.

Review

Compared to previous Mizuno irons the 225’s have a noticeability smaller face and slimmer top profile which I found a little intimidating when first pulling them out on the range. However, I did enjoy the challenge of hitting a more “elite” club and the results did not disappoint.

With a good strike the ball instantly springs off the face with more speed whilst feeling effortless at the same time. This model may not be as forgiving as previous ones if a miss strike occurs but still produces a high towering ball flight that never feels out of control. As a person with a naturally low ball flight it was great to get the added height and spin to gain that extra control in my game.

There are alternatives to the longer irons in the series with the Pro Fli-Hi options. These offer more ball speed and is more forgiving if you are looking for more of a driving iron. I decided to stick with the full range of 225’s as the gaps became too large for me with a 5 and 4 iron. If you are looking for some more distance in your longer irons the Pro Fli-Hi’s may be a better option for you.

For the elite golfer we are always looking for the ability to shape the ball and our clubs should aid us in doing this. The 225’s make it easy to move the ball consistently thanks to the shorter shaft axis and always felt stable whilst shaping the ball especially with a right to left ball flight which can be hard to get consistently.
