Final Mayakoba Golf Classic leaderboard:
What happened at the Mayakoba Golf Classic?
Matt Kuchar looked like he was cruising to the title through 13 holes on Sunday. At 4-under for the day and 24-under overall, only Danny Lee posed a threat to the 40-year-old.
Playing ahead of Kuchar, Lee had posted a final-round 65 and was in the clubhouse at 21-under. Back-to-back bogeys at 14 and 15 made it a nervy final three holes for Kuchar, and at both 17 and 18 he left himself testing par putts, but he held his cool on both to end at 22-under – a tournament record – and clinch his first title for more than four years and eighth overall. It his also his 99th top-10 finish on the PGA Tour.
Headline names Rickie Fowler and Tony Finau both finished eight back of Kuchar, while Jordan Spieth’s poor year continued with a missed cut.
