Tour equipment: Matt Kuchar’s lightweight graphite iron shafts

Peek inside the bags of the majority of the world’s top 50 and , more often than not, you’ll see iron shafts that are incredibly heavy and stiff.

A sly look in the satchel of the World No 4, however, reveals something a little bit different.

Indeed, Matt Kuchar is using Aerotech SteelFiber i95 Constant Weight graphite shafts (95g in stiff flex) that weigh around 40g less than the average steel shaft.

There is logic behind Kuchar’s decision – the shafts are designed to increase distance while maintaining a penetrating ball flight and providing the same feel as steel.

So, basically, that’s the same performance and feel as a steel shaft, but easier to swing and longer. It makes a bit more sense now, doesn’t it?

Kuchar is not the only one to use these products – FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker and former US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy have both been spotted using them.
