The 24-hour rain delay at Aronimink not only put a cloud over the BMW Championship, but also Jordan Spieth.
A tie for 55th left the three-time major champion in 31st place in the FedEx Cup Play-offs standings, one spot outside of qualifying for the season-ending Tour Championship. And that’s a huge problem.
You see, two years ago the PGA Tour opened a policy that stated all players must play a minimum 25 events, or add a new event that they have not played in the previous four years.
Spieth has not added a new tournament this season, and this week’s BMW Championship is his 23rd event. The Ryder Cup, for which he has qualified, counts as an event, so that’s 24.
Spieth, who had never previously failed to qualify for the Tour Championship since gaining his card in 2013, now risks being suspended by the PGA Tour or being hit with a $20,000 fine – pocket change to a man who reportedly has $100 million in the bank.
