Alejandro Canizares (100/1, 6 places) claimed joint top spot at European Tour Q School last week and, with his future for the next year secured, he can play without pressure this week on a course he’s made for.
The experienced, classy Spaniard was on the verge of losing his status, but he dug in deep when it mattered and it seems that things are finally on the up.
“It was difficult for me, it’s been a weird two years coming over here and I couldn’t be happier,” Canizares said after Q School.
“My future wife is pregnant and I’m going to be a father soon. There’s many good things happening at the moment.”
The 35-year-old loves these tough, tree-lined layouts, evidenced by a strong record at Wentworth, and both of his wins came on tight tracks at both Moscow Country Club and Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.
Canizares finished eighth on debut here in 2006 and was 16th last time out on the European Tour at Valderrama.
Edoardo Molinari (125/1, 6 places) is another experienced player that likes these tight courses.
The Italian won the Trophee Hassan II, like Canizares, at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, perhaps the narrowest course on the European Tour circuit.
He has made the cut in each of his last three attempts here, with 14th in 2016 his best effort when he fired a Saturday 64.
Molinari saw his brother lift the Race to Dubai trophy last week and perhaps there’ll be a little motivation burning inside of him as he looks to get his 2019 season off to the best possible start.
