‘It’s very cool to have that after my name’: Hall receives MBE

Georgia Hall is now Georgia Hall MBE after being honoured in the Queen’s birthday list

Georgia Hall says she is “unbelievably honoured” and it is “very cool” to have been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Last year the 23-year-old from Bournemouth became just the third Briton to win the Women’s British Open since it received major status, following in the footsteps of Karen Stupples and Catriona Matthew, when she held off Pornanong Phatlum in a fascinating final-day battle at Lytham.

Hall, a member of Ferndown at the age of 10, enjoyed a successful amateur career before turning pro at 18.

In an Instagram post in June, she wrote: “I am unbelievably honoured to be receiving an MBE!

“It has been so hard for me to keep this amazing news a secret from everyone so I am really happy to be able to talk about it now.

“It’s a huge boost for my confidence ahead of a busy summer of tournaments and I think it’s so awesome for women’s golf to be recognised in this way.

“Sixteen years ago I picked up a club and fell in love with the game and just loved hitting the ball again and again. I must say that still hasn’t changed!”

Speaking to Sky Sports News at the time of the announcement, she added: “It sounds very unreal. I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter.

“It’s such an amazing honour and it’s very cool to have that after my name.”

Fast forward to December and Hall enjoyed a day at Buckingham Palace to receive her MBE and tweeted her delight afterwards.

“Such an amazing day receiving my MBE at Buckingham Palace!” she wrote. “So nice to have women’s golf get the recognition it deserves.”
