Wolff outruns the pack for first PGA Tour victory

Matthew Wolff rattled in an excellent eagle at the 72nd hole to win his first PGA title in his rookie season. Joe Hughes wraps up the action

3M Open report: What happened at TPC Twin Cities?

Matthew Wolff’s stunning eagle at the last gave him a maiden PGA Tour win in just his third start as a professional – and capped one of the season’s most exciting final rounds.

Coming to the 72nd hole requiring that eagle to win, or a birdie to get into a play-off with Bryson DeChambeau, the 20-year-old found the cup in dramatic fashion to secure a one-shot victory.

Final leaderboard

He’d begun the day in a three-way tie for the lead, but his brilliant 65 contained five birdies before it all came down to his final putt.

There was some considerable composure on display coming down the stretch, not only from the champion but also his playing partner and fellow rookie, Collin Morikawa, whose own eagle attempt on 18 just shaved the hole and denied him a play-off.

Morikawa’s tied 2nd finish was enough to earn him unlimited invites for the rest of the PGA Tour season, up until the FedEx play-off events.

Usually, those who don’t hold a PGA Tour card are allowed up to 7 invites, but thanks to the amount of points he accrued, he won’t need to worry about that.

DeChambeau, meanwhile, showed signs that his game is returning to the highs of last season as he narrowly missed out.

The World No. 8 played well throughout the week, and closed out his final round of 66 with an eagle he thought had given him a real shot at a sixth PGA Tour win.

Wolff’s win means he has secured his full PGA Tour card, while Morikawa, who is currently playing on seven sponsor invitations, will tee it up at the John Deere Classic this week without using a precious invite thanks to his top 10 finish.

3M Open report: Talking points

Wolff was the star of the show and, having won so early in his professional career, things are clearly looking fantastic for the American.

Just five weeks ago, he received the GCAA Nicklaus award for Player of the Year and, according to Jack himself, he was still unsure of his plans to turn professional.

Wolff played his college golf out of Oklahoma State University and won the 2019 NCAA Division I Individual Championship.

He’s proved that his decision to join the professional ranks was fully justified, not least after shooting 62 on Saturday and then going on to lift the trophy.

But it’s not just the 20-year-old’s performances that catch the eye – his swing does too.

Players like Jim Furyk have made hugely successful careers with unique swings, and Wolff is looking to follow in those footsteps.

**

Who doesn’t love to see a professional struggle? It’s great see the best occasionally mess one up like the rest of us and, this week, there were a couple of instances across the PGA and Korn Ferry tours which are almost too relatable.
