When is the… 2018 US Open

National Club Golfer gives you a run down of everything you need to know about the 2018 US Open - including dates and venue.

Designed to be one of the toughest tests in golf, the US Open has thrown up its fair share of brutal challenges – and the 2018 US Open will be no different.

Rarely will a course be severely beaten by a player, with winning scores being close to level par or over it. Par is usually set at 70 with an Open course being quite long and will have a high cut of primary rough.

Rory McIlory’s 16-under-par victory at Congressional in 2010 and Tiger Woods‘ 12-under win at Pebble Beach in 2000 are rare instances.

A brief history of the US Open…

The US Open is the annual national golf championship in the United States and is the second major to be played during the season.

The tournament was first played in October 1895 on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island.

It was a 36-hole tournament played in a single day, with ten professionals and one amateur in the field.

Now it is a 72-hole stroke play event played over four days in June at different courses across the United States.

The inaugural US Open at Newport Country Club was won by England’s Horace Rawlins. From the beginning the tournament was dominated by English and Scottish golfers.

The US Open is run by the USGA.

Bobby Jones, Willie Anderson, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus have the most US Open victories with four.

Rory McIlroy has the record for the lowest 72-hole score of 268, after rounds of 65, 66, 68 and 69 in 2011 at Congressional.

There is no lower age limit and the youngest-ever qualifier was 14-year-old Andy Zhang of China who qualified in 2012.

Tiger Woods has the largest margin of victory, where he won by 15 strokes in 2000 at Pebble Beach.

Where is the 2018 US Open?

Traditionally, the US Open is held on courses set up in such a way that scoring is very difficult – it will be no different in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills.

2018 US Open

It will be the fifth time that Shinnecock Hills has hosted the US Open, becoming the only venue to host the championship in three separate centuries. USGA President Jim Hyler:

We are thrilled that our national championship will return to one of our country’s most storied venues.

In 1995, Corey Pavin triumphed at Shinnecock Hills with a two-stroke victory over Greg Norman.

Who could forget Retief Goosen clinching a two-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson in 2004 to claim his second US Open title?
