Scottie Scheffler didn’t have the final tee time of the 2024 Players Championship.
He didn’t even have the penultimate tee time and he still came from deep in the field and the tee sheet to become the first player to win the golden trophy at TPC Sawgrass twice in a row.
Scheffler made up five shots with a stunning 64 while playing in the fourth-to-last pairing with Nate Lashley, half an hour before leaders Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark took to the course.
There will be a slight change this year for the final round and it will mean an early finish.
With the poor weather forecast players will be going out in three balls off holes one and ten – teeing off between 8-10.01am local time / 12-2.01pm UK time. The hope is that The Players Championship winner is crowned before the storms arrive 3-5pm local time / 7-9pm in the UK.
Will someone do similar to Scheffler in 2024 – post a score and wait for the leaders to falter as they battle the course and weather conditions.
Last year Scheffler was in the clubhouse on 20-under-par and had to survive three chances for extra holes when Schauffele, Clark and Harman tackled the 18th hole.
Clark missed out in gut-wrenching fashion. His birdie putt horseshoes around the cup and just like at the Arnold Palmer Invitational the previous week, he came second to Scheffler.
Only time will tell if similar drama will unfold – one thing is for sure, it will be great viewing as the contenders tackle, most likely in the wind, the 17th and then one of the hardest closing holes in golf.

It is looking likely though that in 2025 a non ‘big gun’ might triumph – or will a familiar face shoot a low score and just sit, wait and eventually win?
