The prize purse for the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon was a record.
The total prize pot for the showpiece event at Royal Troon was increased to $17 million, up by $500,000 from the 2023 edition at Royal Liverpool.
The winner’s share of the funds also increased. Xander Schauffele not only took home the Claret Jug, but also a $3.1 million paycheck. Brian Harman, the winner 12 months earlier, took home $3 million.
Such is the case with prize money, there appears to be an onus on the sport’s governing bodies to increase the payout each year. In 2025 at The Open at Portrush, it has stayed at $17 million. Scheffler won $3.1 million for becoming Champion Golfer of the Year.
“I’m a big believer that the athletes are the stars of our sport and they should be well compensated for what they do,” R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said.
“They inspire and excite millions of golfers all around the world. So we’re always going to look to strike the right balance between an attractive prize fund that compensates them for their efforts and our wider responsibilities in the game.
“We have held flat this year. I think prize fund is still 60 percent up on when we were here last time in 2019. That’s strong growth by anyone’s standards. We think the choice we’ve made is really appropriate.
“As you know, at The R&A, we have a unique role to play. We take the surplus that we generate from this Open Championship and we invest it back into the game all around the world, so we think we’ve got the balance just right”
The USGA announced that the winner of the 2024 US Open, which was Bryson DeChambeau, would receive a staggering amount of $4.3 million from the $21.5 million purse. But these figures stayed the same in 2025 when J.J. Spaun won.
