To choose your favourite hole at Augusta National is to somehow distinguish your favourite Thierry Henry goal, or the most memorable showdown between Roger and Rafa.
I’ve landed on the 10th hole, having been in attendance at the Masters for the first time. Gazing upwards from the green, it is the single most beautiful image I’ve seen on a golf course.
The tall trees form a rocky-like landscape with the green valley looping into the sky. The camellia plants nestled below the green are stunning, and that almighty bunker in the middle of the fairway finishes off the aesthetic.
It is a hole where dreams have been both submerged and kept above water. Rory McIlroy famously sent his ball into the cabins down the left on his way to a triple-bogey in 2011, and Adam Scott won Australia its first Green Jacket in pulsating style in 2013.
Bubba Watson hit the best shot any patron saw at Augusta to beat Louis Oostuizen in 2012, and Nick Faldo survived a Scott Hoch horror show to win his second Green Jacket.
Given the context and the view of my own eyes, the 10th hole edges it for me. But there is also the par-3 12th, the par-3 6th, and the par-13th – the 7th hole is an incredible sight too, with those cavernous greenside bunkers venomously visible in the distance from the tee.
Like I say, to choose your favourite Augusta hole is for a parent to choose their favourite child. But I wanted to give the sun-kissed, smiley patrons out here at the Masters and, for the most part, they gave me the answers I largely expected: Amen Corner.

What is the best hole at Augusta according to the patrons?
“The 13th hole, but we also love the 15th too” – said Josh from Iowa
“The 2nd hole. It’s a par 5 that these fellas can reach in two shots, but if you miss the corner of the fairway off the tee, you can get a double bogey. It’s a tough green too” – said Glen from Charlotte.
“From a viewing standpoint, it has to be the bank by the 16th green. You can see the 15th, the tee box here and the 6th hole behind too” – said first-timer Joseph from Alabama.
“We haven’t been to every hole yet, but I’d say 16 if I had to say one” – said fellow first-timer Carey from Augusta.
“Amen Corner, for sure. That is the go-to part of the golf course for us” – said Maria from Augusta.
“Amen Corner. But also, when you first walk in, the 1st hole by the scoreboard – you know you have arrived!” – concurred Kathy from Savannah, but an Augusta resident previously for two decades.
“Either the 13th hole, or the 16th hole. I’ve spent the most time on 13, I think” – said Brian from Chambers, Indiana.
“Hole 12” – said Michael from Savannah
“I love 16. It’s so close to the water and it’s where so much has been made and lost” – said seasoned Augusta visitor Tim of Washington D.C.
“Is it Amen Corner? I like that area” – said Miranda from North Carolina. Can you tell she’s not a die-hard fan?
