Now in its sixth edition, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is one of the biggest events in the women’s amateur calendar.

The tournament, known as ANWA for short, debuted in 2019, as an initiative from new Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley to help grow the women’s game.

The event takes place the week before the Masters Tournament, with the final round being played on the hallowed turf of Augusta National.

Lottie Woad (below) is the reigning ANWA champion, as she crowned her amateur career with a victory by one shot from Bailey Shoemaker in 2024.

What is the history around the Augusta National Women’s Amateur?

The history of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is short, but the competition has quickly risen into one of the biggest amateur tournaments in the women’s calendar.

It was only in 2012 that Augusta National first allowed women to be members of the club. Former Vice President Condoleeza Rice and former President of Rainwater Inc. Darla Moore were the first women to be admitted as members of Augusta National.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley announced prior to the 2018 Masters that the Augusta National Women’s Amateur would begin a year later, and it did.

Three Americans have been victorious so far at the tournament, with Zhang the last of those. Solheim Cup teammate Jennifer Kupcho won the inaugural event in 2019, with Anna Davis winning in 2022.

The first non-American to win the ANWA was Japan’s Tsubasa Kajitani. Her victory was followed by compatriot Hideki Matsuyama winning the Masters Tournament just eight days later.

Who are the previous winners of the ANWA?

There have been four winners since the beginning of the tournament’s history in 2019. They are:

2019 – Jennifer Kupcho
2021 – Tsubasa Kajitani
2022 – Anna Davis
2023 – Rose Zhang
2024 – Lottie Woad

How does the event work?

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur takes place over four days, usually between Wednesday and Saturday, the week before the Masters Tournament.

The 72 players who make the field for the ANWA will play two rounds (Wednesday and Thursday) at Champions Retreat in Evans, Georgia.

From there, the top 30 will make it through to the third round (if there are ties, then there will be a play-off to determine a 30-woman field). There is a practice day at Augusta National on the Friday (in which all 72 can play), with the final round taking place on Saturday to determine the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champion.
