The Truist Championship is played in the week before the PGA Championship.

Truist is the new sponsor of this event that was once called the Wells Fargo Championship. It was named after Wells Fargo in 2011. In 2023, it was announced Wells Fargo would make 2024 the last edition of its title endorsement.

The tournament was only founded in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship and was won by David Toms. It is one of the younger events on the tour.

Rory McIlroy comes in as the defending champion. The Northern Irishman won this event for the fourth time in 2024, beating Xander Schauffele by five shots.

McIlroy won the event at Quail Hollow in North Carolina, where the event has been held for the majority of its existence. In 2025, it will be held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Pennsylvania.

McIlroy played in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs event with Shane Lowry after winning the Masters, but this will be his first crack at a Signature Event since completing the career grand slam at Augusta National in April.

With Scottie Scheffler also winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by a whopping eight shots on 31-under-par last week, we have an absolutely mouthwatering week ahead in Philadelphia with the PGA Championship on the horizon too.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Truist Championship

What are the Truist Championship cut rules?

The Truist Championship is one of eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour. Three of them (the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial and the Genesis Invitational) have cuts, and this event is one of the five that don’t have a cut.

When and where will the Truist Championship take place?

The 2025 edition of the Truist Championship will take place between May 8-11 and will be played on the Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Pennsylvania. This is the last PGA Tour event before the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club, where this event is regularly held.

Who won last season’s Truist Championship?

Rory McIlroy took the title at Quail Hollow in 2024. It was his second win of the season, and shortly after the victory he shared with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

What is the history of the Truist Championship?

The Truist Championship is one of the younger events on the PGA Tour, only dating back to 2003 when it was called the Wachovia Championship.

Quail Hollow Golf Club had hosted the event 19 times before it was moved to Philadelphia Cricket Club in 2025. It has also been held at Eagle Point in Wilmington and TPC Potomac in Maryland.

McIlroy has won this event four times, and Max Homa is the only other player to win this event more than once. The American won in 2019 and 2022.

How do golfers qualify to play at the Truist Championship?

With the event being one of the eight Signature Events on the 2025 PGA Tour schedule, there is a smaller field in Philadelphia.

There are several ways of getting into the field, with players in the following categories qualifying:

  • Top 50 players in the previous season’s FedEx Cup standings
  • Aon Next 10 (the 10 highest-ranked players in the current FedEx Cup Standings, not already exempt, through the events leading up to the next Signature Event)
  • Aon Swing 5 (the top five points earners, not exempt from a higher category, from the tournaments between Signature Events)
  • Sponsors Invite (Each event will offer four sponsor exemptions and a tournament host exemption)
  • Current-year tournament winners (Players who win a PGA Tour event in the current year not exempt via a higher category)
  • PGA Tour members in the top 30 of the Official World Golf Rankings through the event preceding the Truist
  • If you are Tiger Woods, you have a spot in every Signature Event

Can LIV Golf players play at the Truist Championship?

No, they cannot. With the Truist being an official PGA Tour event, we won’t be seeing any LIV Golf players teeing it up.

How can I watch the event?

  • Thursday 8th – Sky Sports Golf from 7 pm
  • Friday 9th – Sky Sports Golf from 7 pm
  • Saturday 10th – Sky Sports Golf from 6 pm, Sky Sports Main Event from 10.30 pm
