If you asked several golf fans who their favourite player was, or who they most wanted to discover how they faired after their latest trip to the course, there’s a strong chance it would be Rory McIlroy.
Since turning professional in 2007, he has built a record of countless victories. McIlroy is a five-time major champion and is approaching the 30-trophy mark on the PGA Tour.
With countless wins on the DP World Tour too, he is regarded as one of the best, if not the best player of his generation. And this is why he is so popular.
It has also been his heartbreaking losses which have led to fans growing so fond of him. The 2022 Open at St Andrews was snatched from his grasp by Cameron Smith when he seemed destined to win the Claret Jug for the second time in his career.
The 2024 US Open at Pinehurst was another near miss that comes to mind. He missed two short putts in the final three holes to surrender the tournament to LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau in a titanic battle.
His career was complete when he finally won the 2025 Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose. He won and lost the tournament about a hundred times in the final round at Augusta National, but got across the line on the first playoff hole against his Ryder Cup teammate.
He became the sixth player in history to seal the career grand slam.
His first four major trophies were won between 2011 and 2014. He has always thrilled golf fans with huge drives, great putts and pulsating celebrations. Since 2010, he has been a stalwart in the Ryder Cup for Team Europe. Across every event, he is one of the most popular players on the ground and if we’re honest, the player that every spectator on the ground wants to see is Rory McIlroy.

Every bogey, par, birdie and eagle is tracked by his band of merry supporters around the world, whether he is playing in the Travelers Championship or the Dubai Desert Classic. He is one of the few players who plies his trade on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
People want to know how Rory got on, similarly to Tiger Woods perhaps, as the 15-time major-winning American continues to squeeze every last inch from his glittering career.
