As we approach the end of the season, the BMW Championship takes centre stage as the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs gets underway.
The tour will visit Caves Valley in Maryland, as it did in 2021, for the second of three playoff events. The Tour Championship will follow, and that is the season finale.
Caves Valley in Owing Mills in Maryland was established in 1991 and held the US Senior Open in 2002. It also held the 1995 US Mid-Amateur, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Championship in 2005, and the first International Crown on the LPGA Tour in 2014.
It hosted the BMW Championship for the first time in 2021 when Patrick Cantlay beat Bryson DeChambeau in a dramatic six-hole playoff.
American star Keegan Bradley is the defending champion after beating Ludvig Aberg, Sam Burns and Adam Scott by one shot in 2024.
The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup ranking following the first FedEx Cup Playoff event, the FedEx St Jude Championship, will get into the BMW Championship. Then, the top 30 get into the Tour Championship.

Scottie Scheffler – 12/5
It might be an awful price and tough to part with your money on this occasion, but Scottie Scheffler is Scottie Scheffler. He almost won the FedEx St. Jude Championship after taking a break between that event and The Open Championship, which he won in dominant fashion.
It wasn’t always his strength, but putting has been key to Scheffler’s success this year. He is 18th in strokes gained on the greens in 2025, and he is ranked first in strokes gained total, off the tee and approaching the green. Despite his price, it really isn’t hard to justify backing the Texan who has won two majors this year.

He might not have his caddie Ted Scott this week again, but this was no issue last week. There are fewer players in the field with just 50 teeing it up, and this can only help Scheffler to pick off the competition.
Patrick Cantlay – 20/1
Patrick Cantlay has won twice at the BMW Championship in recent years. He also won the Tour Championship in 2021, so he clearly excels at these end-of-season events.
You wouldn’t say Cantlay has been at his brilliant best this season, but his consistency has got him into the depths of the FedEx Cup Playoffs once again. He’s had top 10s at Torrey Pines and the Truist at Philadelphia Cricket Club, and he came tied for ninth last week, which was an encouraging sign of form.
I didn’t follow the value logic with Scheffler, but this man is 20/1. He is 10th in total strokes gained across the season and eighth in strokes gained approaching the green. We may see a Cantlay surge in the Playoffs as the Ryder Cup gets nearer. He will likely be in the US team, but he will want to hit form as he has been one of the Americans’ best players in the last two editions.
Jhonattan Vegas – 100/1
Jhonattan Vegas’s season highlight is without doubt his tied for fifth finish at the PGA Championship. He played solidly at Quail Hollow, and this is the performance that has helped him reach this stage of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He is 327 starts into his PGA Tour career, and still has plenty to give and plenty to shout about as a four-time winner.
He was tied for 14th last week in Memphis, which helped him through to the BMW Championship as the 49th-ranked player out of 50. He will need a huge performance this week to become one of the top 30 players to reach next week’s Tour Championship.

He is statistically very solid and is ranked 39th in the driving distance on the tour, which isn’t to be sniffed at.
Where is the BMW Championship?
The BMW Championship is being held at Caves Valley in Maryland this year. It has been held at many different venues since 2007 when Tiger Woods won the first edition of the event at Cog Hill. In 2024, it was held at Castle Pines.

Keegan Bradley won on the PGA Tour for the fourth time at this event in 2024, winning by one shot. He also won the event in 2018, beating Justin Rose in a playoff.
How to qualify for the BMW Championship
The criteria for this event are simple. Once the FedEx St Jude Championship is over, which is the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the top 50 in the FedEx Cup rankings make it to Maryland.
Is there a cut at the BMW Championship?
No, there isn’t. In 2024, all 50 players play all four rounds in the hope they can move into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup rankings, which would see them into the Tour Championship.
