Top 5: Highs and lows of Dustin Johnson’s career
From the crushing lows to the flying highs, NCG’s James Broadhurst charts the rollercoaster career to date of new World No. 1 Dustin Johnson.
Major demons tackled at last
After several missed opportunities to break his duck, Johnson finally bagged that elusive major at the 2016 US Open – but it wouldn’t be a DJ major win without controversy.
Johnson finished four shots ahead of his nearest rivals thanks to a solid final round of 69.
He was deducted a stroke at the end of the round by the USGA after he was judged to have made his ball move as he addressed it on the fifth green, despite being initially absolved of wrongdoing by a rules official.
Later, on the 12th tee, an official informed him that he might be penalised a stroke, but that no decision would be made until the round was complete.
Imagine what that would have done to his state of mind!
Luckily for Johnson – and the USGA – he still finished three shots ahead of Jim Furyk, Shane Lowry and Scott Piercy.
Next goal: World No. 1…
