The first-ever PGA Championship was played in 1916. It was won by Jim Barnes at Siwanoy.
The Wanamaker trophy dates back to the tournament’s very first year and coincides with the formation of the Professional Golfer’s Association of America. You can read more about it here.
It was a match play event until 1957, so Lionel Hebert’s win at Miami Valley was the end of an era, and Dow Finsterwald’s victory at Llanerch was the start of a new one.
Much like each of its three major brothers, the very best of the best have won the PGA Championship. Xander Schauffele is currently the reigning champion after beating Bryson DeChambeau in a memorable encounter at Valhalla in 2024.
This was the American’s first major title after coming close many times and building a portfolio of near misses at the major championships.
Quail Hollow is the 2025 venue where many could expect Rory McIlroy to kick on from completing the career grand slam at the Masters in April.
