A friend’s comments lingered in Charley Hull’s mind so much that she made a triple bogey at a crucial stage in the third round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The popular Englishwoman mishit her tee shot on the par-3 17th hole into the water short of the green which led to a six, moving her six shots behind leader Amy Yang at Sahalee Country Club in Washington.
But as she revealed after shooting 72, Hull’s mind was infested by the hazard after what a friend had said to her about her tee shot on the same hole in the second round on Friday.
“Truthfully, yesterday I hit a shot in the green 30 feet from the pin. Didn’t think nothing of it,” Hull explained “My mate yesterday goes, what happened to you on 17 yesterday? You nearly hit it in the water. I was like, no I didn’t.

“Well, apparently you nearly hit in the water. I was like, no, I didn’t. So got to the tee box and I’m thinking to myself, I never nearly hit in the water. Then I’m thinking about the water and just fatted it into the water. It’s human.”
“Just fatted it,” she added. “Wasn’t even in the shot. It was annoying. It wasn’t like me. I played so well out there today, and didn’t do one thing wrong and got up and down when I needed to.”
Hull made a three at the 17th hole on Friday after finding the putting surface, and she also made par on Thursday.
Yet to win a major title, Hull made five birdies through 12 holes on day three and was just two shots off the lead at one stage, which South Korea’s Yang eventually set on seven-under-par when 54 holes were complete.

One of the highlights of Hull’s round came on the 12th hole when she chipped in for her third consecutive birdie. But the blunder on the penultimate hole brought her back to one-under and in a tie for 12th place.
The 28-year-old from Kettering has come at least third in four of the five major championships in the women’s game. Her best finish at the Women’s PGA Championship was a tie for 6th in 2018.
Yang’s closest pursuer heading into the final 18 holes in Sammamish is America’s Lauren Hartlage two shots behind on five-under, then Japan’s Mayu Yamashita on four-under.
