‘Go eat your own cake!’ Rory and JT take aim at LIV rebels

Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas are having absolutely none of the LIV Golf lawsuit after some of the breakaway league’s players sued the PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas have rarely been shy to offer pointed opinions on LIV’s controversial ascent into the golfing world.

So, when thrown in front of press just one day after a judge ruled whether a trio of rebels could play in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, of course the pair were going to have their say. And as always, the two megastars didn’t disappoint.

McIlroy was first to weigh-in after Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones failed in their legal bid to compete in the PGA Tour’s end of season finale, approving that “common sense prevailed” while urging everyone to move on from the “sideshow”.

There are rumours circulating in golf circles that McIlroy and a number of other players playing in the FedEx St Jude Championship, had gathered around a TV to watch the verdict, with cheers ringing out the when it was delivered.

“From my vantage point, common sense prevailed and I thought it was the right decision,” McIlroy said in his press conference.

“It lets us focus on the important stuff, which is the golf. We can all move forward and not have that sideshow going on for the next few weeks, which is nice.”

Thomas, meanwhile, admitted he was keeping up to date with the court proceedings on Twitter throughout, applauding the decision while expressing the outcome was of personal interest to him.

“It was personal to me from the beginning,” Thomas said. “I said from the start – those guys were given an opportunity to go play and just go play.

“You can have your cake, but you don’t need to eat it, too. And they got their fair share of a large, large amount of cake, and go eat it on your own means. You don’t need to bring it onto our tour.”
