With LIV Golf boasting both an individual and team competition in its season events, things could get interesting with the possibility of not one but two LIV Golf playoffs after 54 holes.
Back in 2024, the LIV Golf season kicked off with a thrilling playoff between Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia, which saw the young Chilean beat his opponent in the dark at Mayakoba.
More recently, Dean Burmester beat Jon Rahm and Josele Ballester in a three-man playoff to win LIV Chicago at Bolingbrook at the end of the 2025 season.
LIV might be a unique format and aiming to become a different entity, with shotgun starts and 54 holes, when compared with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
But is the playoff format different? Has the new Saudi-funded league conjured a completely new format that attempts to make golf even louder?

LIV Golf playoff format
Individual
In the event of any ties after 54 holes in LIV Golf, a playoff will be played to settle the individual competition.
Under similar rules to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, a LIV playoff will adopt a sudden-death format, with any tied golfers playing the 18th hole again.
A winner is then determined by the player scoring the lowest score among the remaining players.
In the majors, playoffs take different forms which have changed over the years.
The Masters adopts a sudden-death playoff format, but the other three major championships are different.
The Open has a four-hole aggregate playoff, the US Open uses a two-hole aggregate playoff and the PGA Championship uses a three-hole aggregate playoff.

Team
In the event of any ties in the LIV Golf team competition, each captain will pick two players (given those players are not involved in an individual playoff) to play together in a sudden-death, aggregate score playoff.
The pair with the lowest combined aggregate score will then secure the win for their team. If the score is the same, teams will advance to the next playoff hole until a winner is determined.
