The BMW PGA Championship is the DP World Tour’s flagship event and has been ever-present on the formerly-named European Tour since its inception in 1972.
With the sizeable purse, world ranking points and tournament history, many of the high-calibre players on the DP World Tour make the trip to play the event each year.
The tournament is currently played at Wentworth Golf Club, and has done so permanently since 1984 when the tournament was called the Whyte & Mackay PGA Championship.
Wentworth is embedded in the history of the tour. There are three 18-hole courses: the West, which the event is played on, the East and the Edinburgh. The West was designed by Harry Colt.
For 45 years, the course hosted the Volvo Match Play Championship, a tournament fondly remembered by seasoned golf fans in the UK, with images of the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam and Colin Montgomerie occasionally being reshared online at this time of the year.
The BMW PGA Championship has been won by some of the biggest names in the game’s history, such as the aforementioned quartet plus Rory McIlroy, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Arnold Palmer.

Who is the defending champion?
Billy Horschel is the defending champion and pocketed €1,370,338 after winning the 2024 tournament. In 2025, the prize money purse is $9 million.
The man from Florida finished tied with Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence on 20-under-par after 72 holes, and entered a sudden-death playoff played on the 18th hole.
Horschel and McIlroy made a birdie on the first hole, and Lawrence dropped out with a bogey. Horschel made a stunning eagle on playoff hole two to take his second victory at Wentworth.
The American has a great record in Virginia Water. He won the BMW PGA Championship in 2021, so he has grown a great affinity with the place.
