On August 15, 1999, with six months of his teens left, Sergio Garcia moved into the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time.
The following January, the Spaniard became the youngest player to ever reach the top 10, just a week after his 20th birthday.
More than 20 years at the top of the game means Garcia shares the incredible milestone of spending 1,000 weeks inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking with just four other players: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, and Ernie Els.
Other than a mini slump between August 2010 and July 2011, Garcia has been an ever present among the world’s elite.
But it’s all about to come to an end because next week, according to Twitter’s self-appointed OWGR guru, @VC606, the 40-year-old will drop to No 51 and outside the top 50 for just the second time since ’99 and the first time in nine years.
Of course, due to playing in the Tiger era, Garcia never got close to being World No 1 – relatively speaking – but did have a few months at No 2 in 2008.
