Penina Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

36 Glorious Holes of Golf

The Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is the only resort in Portugal which offers three golf courses, including the very first golf course to have been created in the region, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course. Penina also plays host to the 9-hole Resort Course and the 9-hole Academy Course.

Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course
The first 18-hole course to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course has played home to the Open de Portugal on ten occasions and is regarded by many as the finest course in the Algarve and beyond. Howard Clark, Sam Torrance and Miguel Angel Jimenez are among the names to have won the tournament at Penina.

As named, the Championship Course at Penina was built and laid out by three time Open Championship winner, Sir Henry Cotton. The Par 73 venue sees golfers have to deal with plenty of water hazards, including streams and ditches, while the raised greens add another challenge to the round.

The 5th is one of those challenging holes on the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, with the fairway split into two by a stream, while the green is perched behind a water hazard. The 13th is arguably the signature hole on the course. At just over 200 yards from the tips, this par-3 features a lake down the right side, which will collect anything that misses the green ever so slightly.

Resort Course
The Resort Course is a stunning 9-hole track. It provides nine holes of solid, but also gentle practice at times. Each hole has two tees to make it an 18-hole set-up, with the quirk of having one nine as a Par 35, and one as a Par 36 to make it a Par 71 if you choose to play 18.

The Resort Course is a member of the Audobon Co-Operative Sanctuary System, with Penina and the greens staff making a concerted effort to aid the protection and preservation of all wildlife residing on and around the course

Academy Course
The Academy Course is a 9-hole, par-30 course, which winds its way between the holes of the Championship Course and the Resort Course. It provides an excellent opportunity to fine-tune your short game, whilst providing a perfect training ground for the novice golfer.

Penina Golf Academy

The Academy at Penina plays host to a stunning range of facilities. The driving range plays off the Bermuda grass, with target greens dotted on the range in the distance. There is also a short game area, with a chipping green and a huge putting green, with the possibility of having a full 18-hole putting course on it.

Along with the facilities, Penina is blessed to have a number of qualified PGA Professionals, including Jose Lourenco, the Penina Golf Academy Ambassador. He has been at Penina for half a century, and provides expert analysis and tuition. With individual lessons, golf clinics and packages available, the Penina Golf Academy is the perfect place to learn more about your swing, and the game itself.

5-Star Accommodation

The Penina Hotel & Golf Resort was the first luxury 5-star hotel in the Algarve region of Portugal, to join the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, which also achieved that mark. The Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is proud to offer an outstanding selection of rooms and suites. Even standard rooms at Penina have stunning views, looking out over either the mountains to the north of the hotel, or over the pool area which is part of the resort.

Along with the rooms and facilities, there are also six stunning restaurants at the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. The Sagres provides the all-inclusive buffet options at both breakfast and dinner, while Le Grill is the exclusive, fine dining restaurant. The Sir Henry Cotton Club is the resort’s golf bar, perfect for a drink and some food after a challenging round on either of the three courses. There is also the Dunas Beach Restaurant, where guests can enjoy the expanse of the cool, blue water.

Beach Club at Penina

The Praia de Alvor offers a glorious expanse of white sand, and it sits just a ten minute drive from the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. Not only can guests relax and dip their toes in the Atlantic Ocean, but there is also the option for leisure activities at the Beach Club at Penina.

The calm waters around the coast are the perfect spot for some water sports, with the likes of windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and kayaking all on offer. There are specialists in all of these categories to walk you through it if you are new to the sport.

There are also family-friendly options included, with the chance to take in the sights of the Atlantic Oceans on a pedalo or a small paddle boat. The Praia dos Tres Irmaos, a formation of three stunning rocks, are slightly further down the beach to the east, and are an amazing sight.
