Amendoeira Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Two Glorious Courses

Amendoeira is lucky to have two stunning 18-hole golf courses that were designed by two big names in the sport. Christy O’Connor Jr, famous for that 2-iron at the 1989 Ryder Cup at the Belfry, is the man behind one course. Meanwhile, six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo is the man behind the other.

The two courses wind their way through the hillside, and have their own challenges. The Faldo Course makes the most of the hills, with several elevated tee shots providing incredible views over the resort. The O’Connor Jr Course is flatter, but has more water to keep you focused during a round.

The Faldo Course
Designed by the great Sir Nick Faldo, the Faldo Course at Amendoeira is a Par 72 championship venue, which measures at more than 7,000 yards from the back tees. Views of the region from the 13th and 15th tees are just one of the reasons to play the course. The greens are firm and fast, but receptive to good shots, with good scores available on a tricky lay-out.

The two par-3s on the back nine, 11 and 16, are the two signature holes on the track. The 11th plays over a water hazard, and has something unique in front of the green. There is an old well from a house that used to be on that piece of land, which has been kept by Faldo in the design. The 16th then plays down the hill to a huge green, with water lurking back right of the green. Par on both and you’re a happy golfer.

The O’Connor Jr Course
The flatter of the two courses at Amendoeira, the O’Connor Jr Course features much more water than the Faldo Course. It is also longer, providing more of a test for the shorter hitters. The water features are spread throughout the course, with only two holes allowing golfers to relax somewhat from the possibility of putting their ball in the drink.

The O’Connor Jr Course complements the Faldo Course brilliantly, offering a different challenge. The subtly undulating greens can trick the eyes of even the best putters in the game.

Amendoeira Golf Academy

The Amendoeira Golf Academy has something for everyone, from beginners to the most experienced of golfers. There is a wonderful driving range which plays down the slope, and has both grass tees and mats to be played on in all weathers.

The range also has a short game area with room for chipping and bunker practice, while there are several putting and chipping areas dotted around the spacious resort, including close to the first tee of both courses.

The Amendoeira Golf Academy offers a wide variety of training programmes. These programmes are aimed at men, women and juniors, and also at golfers of all ages and abilities. Coaching and tuition can also be aided by the TrackMan technology that is available to use within the Academy building.

Floodlit Golf at Amendoeira

As part of the Amendoeira Golf Academy, the resort is also the home to the Academy Course. This 9-hole par-3 course is the perfect place for beginners to learn their games, with holes ranging from 60 to 140 yards.

Not only that, it is also the only floodlit 9-hole golf course in Portugal. This allows groups who have already played 18 on either the Faldo or O’Connor Jr courses, to try their hand during the evenings on the Academy Course. Each hole has a range of teeing options to choose from, with a couple of holes playing over water hazards, just to add another layer of jeopardy into the round.

Sports Centre

The Amendoeira Resort is also the home to a high-class Sports Centre, which features tennis, Padel, football and more. The two racket sports are the main focus of the Sports Centre at Amendoeira, with six Savannah tennis courts and two Padel courts available for guests of the resort to book and use at any time.

There is also a full-size natural grass football field which is reserved for professional teams who come to the region for warm weather training. Amendoeira Sports Centre also offers a 5-a-side astroturf pitch as well. A well-equipped gym is also a feature, with a mile-long running path winding its way around the glorious nature of the resort.

Stunning Apartments and Villas

For now, there is a range of stunning apartments and villas on the Amendoeira Resort. All apartments and villas are completely furnished and equipped with entertainment systems that include smart TVs, kitchens with all the home appliances guests could need, and comfortable and spacious living rooms and bedrooms.

There are two-bedroom apartments and duplex apartments, with the latter having the option of sleeping six with a sofa bed. Three- and four-bedroom villas are also part of the accommodation at Amendoeira, with each of these coming with their own private pool.

Over the next few years, the resort will be building a hotel which will have a further 180 rooms to increase the capacity of the Amendoeira Resort.
