Oitavos Dunes Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Golf With Atlantic Views

Oitavos Dunes is one of the newest golf courses in the region, based in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and has been designed and built with sensitive development to make sure the region is not threatened. Arthur Hills was the brains behind the course - one of only two in Europe to carry his name.

The course provides incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean, thanks to its elevated tees. The majority of holes are tree-lined and require accuracy off the tee. The back nine opens up slightly more - the par-3 14th is the course’s signature hole, playing over a ravine that runs along the right hand side. With the wind coming in off the Atlantic, it requires a solid tee shot.

The venue’s status as a championship level resort was stamped when it hosted the Open de Portugal, a DP World Tour event, in the 2000s. Oitavos Dunes played host in 2005, and then from 2007 to 2009. Amateur Pablo Martin was the victor in 2007, with Paul Broadhurst, Gregory Bourdy and Michael Hoey also winning in Oitavos.

The Oitavos Hotel

The Oitavos Hotel is a unique, luxury five star hotel in Cascais and offers a wide array of accommodation levels, from rooms to suites and lofts. Premium and Superior rooms are located on the first floor; the Premium rooms face west for sunsets on the balcony, while guests can watch the sunrise from the Superior room balconies, facing east.

Next are the Lofts, of which there are three types; Premium, Superior and Superior Corner. Like the rooms, the Premium and Superior rooms face either side of the hotel, but the Lofts are more spacious with a separate living room as well as the bedroom.

The Atlantic and The Oitavos are the hotel’s two suites, which both have bedrooms, living room and dining areas, as well as wrap-around balconies. The most exclusive accommodation at Oitavos Dunes is The Forte - a private villa with king-sized bedroom with a whirlpool bath. There is also a separate living and dining area, a private sundeck and swimming pool with 360 degree views over the sea and Cabo da Roca (Continental Europe's westernmost point).
