This happened a year ago. You could make a film on Sergio Garcia’s temper flashes – kicking off shoes, throwing clubs into lakes and, as recently as the Open Championship, attacking a gorse bush and nearly had to withdraw.

The Masters champion needed a low one to get into contention at the Dell Technologies Championship but his temper ended any chances by the 4th green. After misreading and mishitting an eagle putt he vented his anger on a sprinkler head and, not surprisingly, the water hydrant came out on top.

Given the putter was now bent out of shape, and not in general play, he was unable to use it, an Odyssey Toulon prototype and not the TaylorMade Spider Tour Red he won the Masters with, for the rest of the round.
Out came the TaylorMade M1 fairway wood and in went the birdie putt.

That didn’t last long though and, by the time he came to the 9th, he was using his TaylorMade M2 driver. Which was then retired in action after horseshoeing out from 16 inches, a fourth bogey in five holes.
And so to the back nine where the TaylorMade P750 3-iron came out to play on the greens and there were birdies at 13 and 17 to repair some of the earlier damage.
But a dark day ended with a double-bogey seven though this time it was the TaylorMade Milled Grind wedge and an overhanging branch which was to blame. Garcia’s eventful day ended with a 75.
There were 33 putts, compared with 26 in the first round, and he failed to convert anything from outside 15 feet.
