Ram Golf Corporation began making golf equipment back in the 1940’s and is perhaps best known for its endorsement of players such as Tom Watson, Nick Price and Nancy Lopez some 40 years later. Ram produced some wonderful clubs including the classic bladed Tour Grind irons with which Tom Watson won a number of Open Championships. My own particular favourite was a Ram Tom Watson 64′ wedge (nicknamed Johnny Nostrillo) which helped me ‘up and down’ it from almost anywhere. Those halcyon days are but a distant memory and Ram nowadays is a very different organisation – making a range of golf products aimed more at the casual or starter golfer. Here we test the FX Tour golf shoe.

First Impressions
This shoe presented a clean and sporty look out of the box. The synthetic upper has some detailing to add texture and interest, and a contrasting black saddle links the heel piece to the midsole and collar of the shoe. There are neat Ram logos on the tongue and heel piece which add some visual interest.

This model is offered in three colours. I tested the white/black version, which I think is the nicest looking colourway, although the black shoe would probably be more appropriate for winter golf in the UK.
There is soft padding around the collar, the tongue and the inside of the shoe, which promises a comfortable on-course experience. Unusually, the seven soft spikes come in a separate container along with a spike wrench, and need attaching to the shoe before play. And for a spiked shoe, it is definitely on the light side weighing in at just 370 gms.
The UK size 7.5 (Euro 41.5) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot very comfortably out of the box with no pinch points, so I’d say that this model runs true to size.
On-course testing
Testing was carried out over two rounds in damp conditions on my home heathland course. I found the shoe to be very comfortable straight out of the box. The grip from the soft spikes was secure, with no slipping on uneven or awkward lies. However this shoe does lack the locked-in feeling that some of the other brands offer – there isn’t the torsional stability that you will find in, for example, a tour-validated shoe. And that, I think, is the only significant downside of the FX Tour.

The shoe remained waterproof in the damp, but not wet conditions. Breathability also seemed to be perfectly adequate. My feet felt very comfortable post-round and they definitely felt as though there would be no issues playing 36 holes due to the lightweight nature of the shoe.
The 19th hole
The configuration of the outsole means that this is a shoe that is at home on the course rather than the clubhouse.
It is important to point out that with an RRP of £59.99, this pair of shoes costs less than half the price of most of the shoes that I am currently testing, and , as such, I think that they represent excellent value for money with a clean appearance, comfortable fit and a 12 month waterproof guarantee.

There is the added bonus that they will be easy to maintain with a wipe clean from a damp cloth and I would regard this as a shoe which is suitable for year-round use.
