For a shoe whose full title is Xtreme Platform Stability you would be hoping for something beyond the norm when it comes to stability and balance.
The XPS-1 delivers both in abundance.
The appearance is on the athletic side, and the outriggers (the protruding bits on the sole) take a little getting used to, but the performance is exceptional.
I struggle with my posture, tending to get a little lazy, and the XPS-1s really help me get over the ball. They are remarkably stable but you don’t feel tied down, rather buoyed up to fire into each shot.
Padraig Harrington has been wearing them since Doral and PGA Tour star Gary Woodland, who averages over 310 yards off the tee, is also a fan: “XPS-1 is the most stable golf shoe I have ever worn in my life,” says Woodland.
“I can get explosive and fire off my right side.”
FootJoy will release one colourway next month, with a further two available in January.
Look out for the shoe in its striking red box in your pro shop.
