TaylorMade SIM Max irons review

We've got some game improvement irons and super game improvement irons from TaylorMade for 2020. But how did they get on in the hands of our scratch golfer

TaylorMade SIM Max irons review: First impressions

We see the blue colour scheme from the rest of the SIM range featuring in these irons. Straight off the clubs have a very fast, sport car look. But just how fast are they?

TaylorMade SIM Max irons review: The technology

As with the M5 and M6 models, Speed Bridge technology is the key story here. This is the beam which spans across the back of the iron and connects the back bar to the topline. What do you mean you don’t get it? This improves stability in the top of the face as well as supporting the topline and reducing unwanted vibrations. This delivers improved sound and feel and works with the ‘speed pocket’ to provide increased ball speed and distance.

There is also an echo dampening system, but if you want to know more you’ll have watch the video.

TaylorMade SIM Max irons review: NCG verdict

These are game improvement irons so, while not designed for me, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t benefit from the technology. There is far more meat on the bones than what I am used to but that doesn’t mean the shape and the sizing didn’t suit my eye. I generally have a left miss and these are offset, so that was a concern for me.

That said, my average launch was consistent and just to the right of target. I gained more than 10 yards with the SIM Max compared to my current P760 irons, flying an average of 159 yards compared to 147 yards.

Andy and I both saw most gains out of the SIM Max irons – perhaps due to the smaller profile giving us the confidence to swing at the ball more, as my clubhead speed was up 2mph with the SIM Max.
