Black is back: Introducing the G710 irons from Ping
Ping G710 irons: First impressions
Instantly the new ‘Stealth’ black finish looks great and makes the iron look more compact. It is important to note the actual clubface isn’t grey so does contrast with the rest of the clubhead.
Ping G710 irons: The technology
The combination of stainless steel body and tungsten toe and shafts weights increase the MOI for added forgiveness. This also provides higher launch giving golfers more distance and accuracy especially those with slower swing speeds.
The usual hydropearl chrome finish has a black PVD coating called Stealth by Ping. Not only does this create a perception of a more compact head by it repels water. (This provides hydrophobicity, if you want some fancy words to punch into Google.)
An epoxy sits behind the face, dampening undesirable frequencies for better sound and feel. They also feature a built in Arccos smart grip to help you track your stats.
Ping G710 irons: NCG verdict
I really like the new black finish and also the grey clubface. I felt it narrowed in my focus on the impact zone for more consistent strikes.
Throughout the set I found I was gaining more yardage as I moved up into the longer clubs. My current 7-iron was travelling 144 yards, with last years Ping G410 I was getting 145 yards. The Ping G710 gave me 151 yards carry, a significant increase. I was also really impressed with the compact front to back dispersion of shots.
